about

Throughout the 30 years since its formation in 1980, Fra Fra Sound has performed and recorded consistently vital and stirring music while standing for equal rights, integration, and human decency. Black Dutch & More deals with identity and consciousness in Holland and Europe where immigration an integration are important issues.

Vincent Henar, leader and bassist with Fra Fra Sound explains: “This album and the poetry are connected to parts of the history of black music, where the strength of the music was used to communicate ideals and was also a strong tool in the struggle for equal rights and liberty.”

For the first time, Fra Fra Sound utilizes a poet on one of their recordings. Ghasem Batamuntu, who appears on four of the ten selections, is an American saxophonist, percussionist, arranger-composer, multimedia performer, educator and leader of several groups. Born in Oakland, California, he has lived in Ansterdam since 1992 and, as can be heard here, is a skilled and insightful poet.

With Black Dutch & More Fra Fra Sound is entering new territory. With the title of the project Fra Fra Sound gives a multi-dimensional answer to the questions who the musicians are, and what their music stands for. The artistic development of Fra Fra Sound and the music produced by them is essentially a product of contemporary Amsterdam and Dutch society. The artistic aspirations for Fra Fra Sound are based on three prevalent social and cultural issues, being migration, globalization and the multicultural society, both national and international.

Under the nomenclature Black Dutch & More Fra Fra Sound follows the historic line from artistic engagement to musical renewal. This project is a fulfillment of a cherished desire to melt music with poetry, story telling, oral tradition and spoken word.
An excellent and congenial partner was found in the multi-talented person Ghasem Batamuntu. The release of Black Dutch & More coincides with Fra Fra Sound’s 30 year celebration. Fra Fra Sound is continuing to build bridges as cultural entrepreneurs and ambassadors of music.
